Methods in TESOL K-12 at the Elementary and Secondary Levels

EING-3515

EING-3515 is a course focused on exploring the major methods and approaches used to teach English in K–12 classrooms. Throughout the semester, students examine different language-teaching philosophies, analyze how each method works, and discuss how these approaches can be adapted to real classroom situations. The class combines readings, videos, lesson-planning activities, and reflective tasks that help future teachers connect theory with practice. By the end of the course, students develop a stronger understanding of how to select appropriate strategies, create engaging lessons, and support English language learners effectively at different grade levels.

Assignments Done in Class:

In the following, you will have the opportunity to see my work done in this course.

Classroom Management Project: Part I

For this assignment, I developed a complete Classroom Management Portfolio that showcases the tools and strategies I would use as a future teacher. I created a First Day Parent Packet with my introduction, rules, consequences, homework policy, and contact information. I also designed expectations for students and teachers, along with a visual bulletin board mock-up. In addition, I prepared 20 classroom procedures, each with a clear explanation and justification. I completed the project by writing a Last Day of Class letter and my teaching philosophy. This portfolio demonstrates my understanding of effective classroom management and how I plan to create a positive, organized, and supportive learning environment.

Classroom Management Project: Part II

For this assignment, I had to present my Classroom Management Digital Portfolio in a 5–15 minute oral presentation. During the presentation, I gave an overview of my portfolio and highlighted the most important and creative parts of my work. I selected two key sections to explain in more depth, discussing why I created them and how they support effective classroom management. I also explained the reasoning behind some of my decisions, such as my rules, procedures, bulletin board design, or teaching philosophy. To keep the presentation engaging, I used visuals from my portfolio and made sure my face was visible throughout the video. This presentation allowed me to practice communicating my ideas clearly, reflect on my classroom management strategies, and share insights with my classmates.

Field Experience Project

For this assignment, I observed one English teacher and their students over five days in a classroom that aligns with my methodology course. The goal was to identify and analyze instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and differentiation methods used to support diverse learners. I reflected on the effectiveness of these approaches, connected them to educational theories from my coursework, and documented examples of inclusive teaching practices and differentiated instruction. I also observed the teacher’s professional behaviors, such as communication, collaboration, and ethical conduct, and considered how these model professional standards for my own growth as an educator. This project allowed me to gain practical insights into real classroom dynamics, understand how teachers foster positive relationships and classroom culture, and strengthen my own developing teaching practices.

The Classroom Management Project: Part I helped me understand the importance of creating a well-structured and organized classroom environment. By developing a complete portfolio that included rules, procedures, expectations, and communication tools, I learned how essential it is to plan to support student behavior and learning. This assignment allowed me to think intentionally about how to create a positive and respectful classroom culture from the first day. It also helped me connect my teaching philosophy with practical strategies that promote consistency and fairness. Overall, this experience strengthened my ability to design a classroom environment that supports both academic success and student well-being.

The Classroom Management Project: Part II allowed me to develop my communication and presentation skills by sharing my ideas in a clear and professional way. By explaining key components of my portfolio, I reflected more deeply on my decisions and how they support effective classroom management. This experience helped me understand the importance of being able to justify my teaching strategies and present them confidently. It also reinforced the value of using visuals and organization to communicate ideas effectively. Overall, this assignment strengthened my ability to articulate my teaching approach and engage an audience.

The Field Experience Project provided me with valuable insight into real classroom dynamics and teaching practices. By observing an experienced teacher, I was able to see how instructional strategies, classroom management, and differentiation are applied in practice. This experience helped me understand how teachers adapt to students’ diverse needs and create inclusive learning environments. It also allowed me to reflect on professional behaviors such as communication, collaboration, and ethical conduct. Overall, this assignment strengthened my ability to connect theory with practice and prepared me to apply these strategies in my own future classroom.
