  4. Use positive reinforcement and encourage effort.

  5. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians.

  6. Adapt lessons to meet diverse learning needs.

  7. Model professionalism, punctuality, and responsibility.

  8. Reflect on teaching practices and seek improvement.

Expectations for teachers are just as important as those for students because they establish the foundation of trust, accountability, and mutual respect that make a classroom thrive. As an ESL teacher, I must serve not only as a language instructor but also as a role model for behavior, effort, and professionalism. Students carefully observe the actions of their teachers, and they are more likely to respect classroom expectations when they see their teacher consistently modeling the same standards of fairness, responsibility, and respect. This consistency reinforces the message that expectations apply equally to everyone in the learning community.

Being prepared and organized for each lesson demonstrates responsibility and care, while providing clear instructions ensures that students, especially those still developing English proficiency, understand what is required of them. Teachers must also remain patient and flexible, as students learn at different paces and bring diverse needs into the classroom. Using positive reinforcement is essential for ESL students, since encouragement helps build the confidence they need to practice a new language without fear of making mistakes.

Maintaining open communication with parents and guardians strengthens the connection between school and home, ensuring that students feel supported in multiple environments. Furthermore, adapting lessons to accommodate various learning styles and abilities promotes inclusivity and equity, allowing all students to succeed. Finally, by reflecting on my teaching practices and continually striving for improvement, I show students that learning is a lifelong journey. These expectations create a professional, supportive, and engaging classroom culture.
